Offline by default. The reading happens where the document already is.
It began on the way to work, with a pile of regulation.
Fluence. is made by Yannick Huchard at Yay Software, in Luxembourg. One person writes the apps, the site, and the answer you get when you write to support.
I read a great deal of regulation, and those documents run long. I found that I took more of it in by listening than by reading: in the car, on the train, on the way to work. The attention holds for longer, and more of it stays afterwards.
I also write, about technology, architecture, artificial intelligence and what life teaches along the way. Reading and listening are most of how I work.
I tried the services that read a document aloud. Several of them. They are good, and they ask for a subscription that outgrows what they give, or the voice tires you before the second chapter. Building products is my trade, from architecture and development to hosting, so I built the reader I wanted for myself.
Three things were settled first
The newest work in speech and in models small enough to run on a phone, as soon as it is good enough to listen to.
Your own documents, freed: listen to any of them, and share the ones you choose.
That is the whole of it. Listen to any document. Share your own knowledge, document by document, when you decide to.
The name, the point, and the black
Fluence is fluency in a field: the ease that arrives once a subject has gone in.
It stands beside Eloquence., the other thing I make, and the two are one idea turned around. Eloquence. takes what you say and gives it back as something others can read. Fluence. takes what others wrote and gives it back as something you can hear.
The full stop belongs to the name. It gives it an end, and it comes back in everything I make.
Black and white, for the contrast and for what black carries. In martial arts the black belt is worn by mastery, and the kimono holds the same two colours. That is the ground the apps are drawn on.
Why it works without an account
A reading app that sends your documents away has to be trusted with them. Fluence. earns that trust in a different way: it keeps the work on your device, so what you read stays yours alone. The voice ships inside the app. The questions you ask a document are answered by a model that runs on the phone.
That is also why Fluence. is bought once. A subscription needs a reason to keep charging you, and the usual reason is a server to pay for. The work happens on your phone, so one payment covers it.
The two apps
Fluence.
Reads a document aloud, follows the words as you listen, and answers questions about what is on the page. On Google Play today. The iPhone and iPad version is with Apple for review.
Fluence. for Mac
The same reading, with the PDF work a desktop asks for: edit, sign, fill, export. In the making since October 2026.
